Food bank sounds alarm on low holiday supplies
(11/05/07) STAMFORD ? One southwestern Connecticut food bank says it could end up struggling to feed the needy as the holidays approach.
According to representatives of the Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County, supplies are extremely low for this time of year. Currently, the facility has about 22,000 pounds of food. However, they say they need more than 500,000 pounds.
In addition, turkeys are in short supply. Kate Lombardo, executive director of the Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County, says the bank needs about 3,000 turkeys for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. Right now, she only has five in the freezer.
?Everyone deserves a turkey on Thanksgiving,? Lombardo says. ?It?s important, it?s that time of year when your family gets together and sometimes it?s the only time of year a family really gets together.?
Lombardo blames high gas prices and a slumping economy on the lack of donations.
Anyone interested in donating to the food bank can call 203-358-8898 or e-mail amytarantino@sbcglobal.net.
