Benjamin Olmstead, New Canaan DPW worker, dies after being hit by car

New Canaan police say a public works employee who was hit by a car earlier this week has died.
Police say Benjamin Olmstead, 71, was marking the road with spray paint Wednesday morning at the intersection of New Norwalk Road and East Avenue when he was hit. They say Olmstead died Thursday.
Police say Olmstead worked in the town for more than 36 years and had unofficially retired from his job by working part-time.
Olmstead's family says he always had a smile on his face.
Officers say the person who hit him stopped immediately and stayed at the scene. They say the driver stated he did not see Olmstead in the road.
