The mother of a Bridgeport man whose fiancee admitted to shooting him in a church parking lot, according to police, is opening up about her loss.

Marcia Lopez lives in Colorado. Speaking with by phone Wednesday, she said she was heartbroken when she learned that her son, Jacob Lopez, was dead. His fiancee, Griselle Pizarro, allegedly shot him at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses on Sunday.

"We are sad that our son is dead. We are sad that it happened this way," said Lopez. "No parent wants to know that their child has been murdered."

Police said that Pizarro told them her fiance had physically assaulted her, but the victim's mother doesn't believe Pizarro's self-defense claim.

"It hurts us to know that they are calling him an abuser and stuff because he was a good guy," said Lopez.

Pizarro appeared before a judge Monday. While her family attended, none of the victim's family was present.

"We are making out the arrangements to bury him and get his body back here," said Lopez. "That's why nobody is there."

Pizarro's attorney said that his client was licensed to carry a gun and that the victim did have a history of domestic abuse.

Pizarro's sister has started a GoFundMe page to try and raise funds for legal fees. Pizarro remains jailed on $500,000 bond.

Lopez said her son leaves behind a 12-year-old son, who lives in Colorado. A memorial service is planned next Wednesday in Colorado.

"We don't harbor hatred for anyone," said Lopez. "We just want to see this resolved for our son's memory."
