DERBY -

Immigration authorities have postponed the deportation of an undocumented immigrant in Derby, according to Sen. Richard Blumenthal.

The two-year stay for Luis Barrios was granted Friday morning after an earlier emergency 30-day reprieve that the senator also helped obtain.

Barrios fled to the state from Guatemala 25 years ago, where his father and brother have since been murdered. He had been threatened with immediate deportation last week, and says the stay will allow him time to appeal his asylum decision, which he believes will succeed.

"It gives us the opportunity to present the larger case about why he should be permitted to stay in this country with his family," Blumenthal says.

He missed an asylum hearing in 1998, and since 2011, he's been granted one-year extensions.

According to Barrios' lawyer, if he leaves the country he cannot return for 10 years.
