BRIDGEPORT -

Nearly 200 people in Bridgeport came out to pay tribute to a man killed during a robbery.

The corner of Lexington and Linen avenues was renamed Jose A. Salgado Way Saturday to honor the man slain in a robbery at his grocery store in April of 2015.

Mayor Joe Ganim also declared Saturday Jose A. Salgado Day.

Salgado's family tells News 12 Connecticut they are deeply honored by this tribute and how he was beloved by the community.

They say Salgado would close his store early to deliver groceries at no charge to the sick and elderly. Salgado's son says he rallied behind his father's spirit and his strength to get through this incredibly difficult time.

The Portuguese ambassador to the United States was among the dignitaries on hand for the event.
