BRIDGEPORT -

A hijacked delivery truck led Bridgeport police on a chase into North Haven Thursday morning, slamming into four squad cars in the process, according to authorities.

Police arrested Mercedes Bruno, 27, who they say stole the truck from Junco's Meat Market on Harral Avenue while its driver was dropping off bread around 6:30 a.m.

"I have to deliver the bread, stack it, and get to my stops on time," says Jeff Groth, the delivery driver. "So I'm never thinking about the truck getting stolen."

Surveillance video shows Groth running back out of the store after a woman, allegedly Bruno, slipped into the truck and threw it into gear.

Bruno allegedly led police down Park and Wood avenues, and then onto Interstate 95, where state police took over the pursuit.

Bruno is facing multiple charges including carjacking, evading responsibility and leading police in pursuit. Authorities eventually caught her on Interstate 91 in North Haven after she crashed into a guard rail and light pole, leaving the roadway littered with ejected bread, police say.

"It's unbelievable to me, because she does not seem to be that kind of person to me at all," says Damien Torres, who also says he knows Bruno.

Police also were unable to provide a motive.
