Developer unveils plans for Harbor Yard revamp
Officials and developers outlined their multimillion-dollar plans for the Ballpark at Harbor Yard Thursday.
Earlier this week, officials announced that the Bridgeport Bluefish would soon move out of their home of 20 years, which will become a concert venue. The new Live Nation stage will sit over the ballpark's current outfield, with the rest of the park holding 5,000 to 8,000 seats.
Officials say the $15 million amphitheater conversion will house VIP lounges and state-of-the-art features. Developer Howard Saffan says the city will cover part of the cost, and the overhaul is expected to create more than a thousand jobs during the construction phase. Once the rebuilding is complete, officials say the venue will have 300 new part-time jobs and about three dozen full-time jobs.
Jim Koplik, the president of Live Nation Connecticut, say he's been looking for a place to build an amphitheater for six years.
"Fairfield County is a great market," Koplik says. "We do very good business in the arena, and this would be a beautiful amphitheater."
Officials expect about a $50 million impact on the local economy annually.
The  City Council still has to approve the plan and is expected to make a decision sometime in September. If it's approved, the city hopes this amphitheater will open in the spring of 2019.
