Hurricane Irma's tumultuous trip through the Caribbean is complicating travel plans for the residents of western Connecticut.
The Wilton Center Travel has been fielding phone calls not just from the few people with September vacation plans, but also from concerned residents like a man trying to get his daughter out of Charleston, South Carolina, just in case Irma rides up the coast.
The travel agency has already heard from some Caribbean resorts, which aren't taking any new bookings until they can assess the damage from Irma. Damage could take months to repair.
On the bright side, the storm came during a slow season for vacationing, experts say.
"Right now, it's back-to-school time, and a lot of people are focusing on that," says Margaret Sanko, who works with the travel agency. "So right during this time frame, we have very few vacations booked at the Caribbean."
And for people who have tickets for flights scheduled during the next few days, some carriers are already waiving change fees.
