The Westport Police Department is asking salons in Fairfield County to help victims of domestic violence.
This month, the department and the Westport Domestic Violence Task Force are collecting gift certificates to help women in shelters start new lives.
About a dozen beauty parlors from several towns have stepped up, including Sola Salons - a collection of small studios, each run independently.
Officer Jillian Cabana says for some women, the cut and color means a better chance at a job. For others, the new look means being able to escape a dangerous abuser.
The Westport Police Department is collecting the gift certificates through the end of the month. The department hopes more salons join in the effort.
