A former pitcher at Joel Barlow High School in Redding is heading to the World Series this year with the Houston Astros.
Athletic director Mike Santangeli says Charlie Morton could throw above 80 mph as a freshman and had scouts lining up at his games. He graduated in 2002 and has bounced around the league.
On Saturday, he pitched in a win over his childhood favorites, the New York Yankees, resulting in the Astros' championship berth against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
"One, I'm extremely proud of Charlie," Santangeli says. "I know how proud everybody is of Charlie, and I'm rooting for him to do great things, and he deserves it. He deserves everything he can possibly get in this world -- but the other side of it is I'm a Yankees fan."
The World Series begins in Los Angeles Tuesday night.
