Darien police say a Norwalk Community College student with autism was scammed out of $700.
Police say a man approached 18-year-old Christopher at the school Tuesday and asked for help cashing checks for his tuition. The man wanted to know if he could deposit the checks into Christopher's bank account and withdraw the money.
Christopher agreed, and they went to the TD Bank in Darien, where he used his PIN at the ATM. Police say the man deposited two checks that were fraudulent, and then withdrew $700 from the account.
Police say they're looking for the man who deposited the checks, as well as a second suspect who drove them to the bank.
Doreen Caruso, Christopher's mother, says there are no laws that tack on additional penalties for targeting people with autism, like there are with senior citizens. She says she's looking to change that.
"I'm going to make sure that this doesn't ever happen again to him or to somebody else," she says.
Police are unsure whether the two men involved are students at the college, but say they do have security images of the man who approached Christopher.
Caruso says her new mission will be contacting legislators.
