Towns and villages across Long Island are beginning preparations for the winter weather that forecasters say is heading our way.

A winter storm warning was issued for part of Suffolk from 4 a.m. Saturday until Sunday morning. A winter weather advisory was issued for the rest of the Island.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino says crews there are ready for whatever comes.

"We have 290 pieces of equipment that are fueled up and ready to go," he says.

Saladino also says the town had 9,000 tons of salt and sand ready, but drivers should still drive carefully.

On the South Shore, authorities spent Friday preparing as well.

Jack Schnirman, the Long Beach city manager, says crews there break down the city into quadrants and get to work quickly.

"Long Beach is quite storm-tested," he says. "We have a great crew, and they are ready to roll."

Long Islanders preparing for the first snow of the season were out Friday stocking up on snow essentials at supermarkets and hardware stores.

"It's a little early," laughed Betty Walsh, of Amityville. "It's a lot early actually."

Noah Oliva, 8, says he eagerly awaits the expected snow.
