A New Jersey woman is being hailed as a hero after she saved three young brothers and their dog from a house fire.
Sue Reynolds says that she was working at Pine Belt Cadillac in Toms River when she noticed smoke and flames coming from across the street.
“I just saw the flames and I started running,” Reynolds says.
Reynolds came across a home that was on fire, about a block away from the dealership. She says that she saw a “Beware of dog” sign and wanted to see if there were pets inside the home. But when she saw toys in the backyard, she says she became even more worried.
“As I was saying, ‘Your house is on fire’…the boys emerged and were shocked as if they had no idea that their home was on fire,” Reynolds says.
Reynolds led the 8-, 10- and 12-year-old brothers out of the home, along with their dog.
“The sad part was the one young boy had actually asked me outside, he said ‘Is that my room?’ and it broke my heart and I said ‘I don't know honey, but you can't go back in,’" Reynolds says.
The fire department arrived soon after that and was able to quickly put out the fire. The home sustained some damage, but it will be able to be repaired.
Word soon got out about Reynolds’ heroics and she was praised. Neighbors came by the car dealership to bring Reynolds gifts as a sign of thanks.
“This is the positive thing that comes out of tragedy, to just say community can pull back together,” Reynolds says. “That’s what I want, that’s what makes me feel good.”
The family is now staying with relatives in Lakewood until their home can be repaired.
