Warming centers opened across the state as a deep freeze moved in Tuesday, but many people spent time outside for various reasons.

The Westport PAL skating rink, right on the waterfront, may be among the coldest spots in the state. And families with children on winter break from school packed it all day.

Also among the visitors were holiday travelers from warmer states like North Carolina and even as far away as Norway.

"Fifteen degrees is not NC weather," says Scott Emmert, of Raleigh, North Carolina. "It's 45 down there, and that is cold for us."

The group of Norwegians chuckled at the notion that the weather could be uncomfortable.

"We always say there is no bad weather, just bad clothes," says Trudy Brandstad. "So if you dress for it, it's nice to be outdoors."

The cold weather is expected to stick around for the rest of the week, according to forecasts.
