Police in Stamford say a Fairfield mother of two was hit and killed by a vehicle while walking to work.

It happened Tuesday around 7 a.m. at Elm and North State streets downtown.

According to police, the 59-year-old victim was in the crosswalk when the driver turned onto North State Street from Elm Street and hit her.

She had gotten off the train and was just feet away from the Henkel building where she worked.

The victim was taken to the hospital, where she died of her injuries.

Police say the driver, a 38-year-old Stamford resident, stayed on the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

Police have not released the name of the victim at this time pending notification of next of kin.

The state's attorney's office will determine if the driver will face charges.
