Easton cop saves pit bull from burning house

An Easton police officer rescued a dog from a burning house last Friday.
Officer Don Kinahan says he was just doing his job when he saved Hailey, a 1-year-old pit bull, from the Deerfield Drive home.
"I was the first one on scene," Kinahan says. "There was smoke billowing up the stairs."
Firefighters were battling frigid temperatures and whipping winds, and the homeowner told Kinahan about the dog, who was trapped inside.
"The dog was scratching on the door, and he was in pretty bad shape," Kinahan says. "I could hear him, but the smoke was so thick I couldn't see him. So I was trying to keep low and get him out, but after I left a second time he followed me out."
The officer had crawled in below the smoke until he found Hailey. And although he says he doesn't consider himself a hero, other people are hailing him as one.
"I think at heart we're all animal lovers," Kinahan says. "Any other police officer would have done the exact same thing. I'm confident of that."
Kinahan was treated for smoke inhalation, the dog is OK and the owner was taken to St. Vincent's Medical Center.
