Escaped Enfield inmate back behind bars
An inmate who escaped custody from an Enfield prison last month and fled the state is back behind bars.
Jerry Mercado is now under the highest level of supervision at the Northern Correctional Institution.
According to officials, Mercado escaped from the Carl Robinson Correctional Facility, a medium security prison in Enfield, by hiding in a truck back on Jan. 7.
Mercado was returned to Connecticut over the weekend after being arrested at a gas station in Canton, Georgia, about 40 miles north of Atlanta.
He was on the run for 10 days.
Mercado is serving a three year sentence for burglary, but may now face new criminal charges.
State officials say Mercado was set to be released about a year from now.
