Hempstead releases report on sluggish snow removal response

The Town of Hempstead released an analysis of snowplowing procedures Tuesday as a response to the more than 3,600 complaints the town received after the Jan. 4 snowstorm.
Hempstead Town Supervisor Laura Gillen had been on the job for only four days before more than a foot of snow fell across the Island.
"We heard their complaints and we're going to address their complaints," says Gillen.
Karen Nardone, from Oceanside, says the sluggish response made it difficult to drive off her block.
"You had to get to work, you had to get to school and you couldn't get down the block," says Nardone.
Gillen says agencies were following the last administration's protocols and that there was a lack of coordination between town agencies. She also said technological failures with the town's GPS system, which tracks where plows have been, led to the slow response.
Supervisor Gillen issued a list of directives in the report. One of them includes "consolidating sole responsibility and oversight of snowplowing operations from three departments into the Highway Department, answerable directly to the supervisor."
Gillen told News 12 that they will also be updating maps created 50 years ago to reflect what roads look like now.
