Bridgeport family moves into new Habitat for Humanity home

BRIDGEPORT -

A Bridgeport couple who has never been able to afford their own home says they got an early Easter miracle Saturday.

The Quinones family of Bridgeport says there is no greater expression of the American dream than owning your own home. Since they got married 20 years ago, they say that dream has been well beyond their reach.

For Coralys and Felix Quinones and their three children, not being able to achieve that dream led to frustration. He's a maintenance worker and she works in a cafeteria. They say they don't make a lot of money and could never afford to do more than rent. When Habitat for Humanity got them a zero-interest loan, they were ecstatic.

“It's an emotional feeling that we finally get to be in peace in our house and our kids are safe in our house," said Coralys Quinones.

In spite of years of struggling, the family says they never lost faith. They feel deeply blessed to be getting their new home.

Members of Youth United, the young person’s branch of Habitat for Humanity, helped build the house and say it felt wonderful helping this family.

The Walter Lucket Junior Foundation sponsors a fundraising event every year through its Hoops for Habitat Program to make events like this possible for the Quinones family.

Youth United will hold a fundraiser next Saturday at Wakeman Boys and Girls Center in Bridgeport from 3:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Organizers say the proceeds will benefit the Quinones family and their home.
