A Sacred Heart University graduate student is leading a bone marrow drive in an effort to find a lifesaving donor for his father.

Michael Limosani says his father Wayne has multiple myeloma, and a transplant is his best chance of survival.

The younger Limosani says in 2015 he donated his own bone marrow and stem cells to a stranger. 

"One day, you might need a donor, or one of your loved ones might need a donor," he says. "And you'd just hope that someone would be willing to extend the gift of life to you."

Now he's on a mission to find a match for his dad.

Wednesday he teamed up with the nonprofit DKMS, which fights blood cancers, to hold a registration drive at Sacred Heart University. The organization says 70 percent of people suffering from blood-related illnesses have to rely on donors outside their families to save their life. 

Samples are collected via cheek swab to determine which donors match which patients.

Throughout the day, people stopped by, learned about the process, and signed up in hopes of helping Limosani's father or someone else.

DKMS says the goal was to get about 100 people at Sacred Heart to participate in the drive.

Wayne Limosani, 56, worked for the West Haven Board of Education for years. He received the diagnosis three years ago.
