Republican New Britain Mayor Erin Stewart has picked Greenwich First Selectman Peter Tesei as her running mate in her bid for Connecticut governor.
The pair posed for photos outside Greenwich Town Hall after a news conference Tuesday. The Republicans are positioning themselves as moderates hoping to attract swing voters.
Tesei says pairing up with Stewart gives their ticket geographic, generational and gender diversity. The alliance also gives Stewart access to Greenwich's wealth of delegates and donors.
Several other candidates in the crowded field have said they would consider the 30-year-old Stewart as their running mate. But she says she is not considering them.
"It's myself as governor and Peter Tesei as lieutenant governor -- that is the team that is going forward," Stewart said.
Stewart says she's close to having the 182 delegates needed to get on the primary ballot.
Tesei has served six terms as first selectman in Greenwich -- the longest anyone has ever held that job.
