Officials in Woodbridge unveiled an energy failsafe Monday that they say will protect essential town services from power outages.

The entire microgrid is underground, and control boxes are the only topside evidence of the new failsafe.

Gov. Dannel Malloy cut the ribbon in front of the Woodbridge Town Center, where officials say the microgrid will keep the lights on for police, fire and emergency services in case of widespread power outages. It's fed by a fuel cell housed at nearby Amity High School.

Representatives from United Illuminating, which built the microgrid, say when the fuel cell isn't providing emergency power, it will generate clean, renewable energy for the regional grid.

Many of Woodbridge's essential services are housed in the town center.
