Golfers tee off for charity in Norwalk

NORWALK -

Golfers hit the links for a good cause in Norwalk Monday.

Organizers told News 12 that around 70 golfers participated in the first annual Tee Off For Preemies charity golf tournament and silent auction benefiting Tiny Miracles Foundation.

The Connecticut-based nonprofit provides mentoring and aid to families with premature babies. Organizers say that having a baby in intensive care can be hard on a family both financially and emotionally.

"When a family has a baby in the NICU, it can be an extremely terrifying and draining experience, both emotionally, physically and financially in many cases," said Liam Burke, board member of Tiny Miracles Foundation.

Marisela Esposito, the board president of the nonprofit, knows what it is like to have a baby in intensive care. She told News 12 that she's a bereaved mother of 21-week twins, who would have been 17 years old this summer. She also had a preemie son, who is now 15 years old.

"That is why I do it, because of the blessings from my son, that's why I volunteer," she said.

There were prizes for the top male and female teams, including a chance to win a diamond with a hole-in-one.

Organizers expected to raise at least $15,000 during the event.
