The New Canaan Board of Selectmen decided to postpone a decision on the town’s annual Pop Up Park at a meeting Tuesday.
The temporary park has been set up downtown every summer for the past several years.
The decision from the meeting was to table the discussion until July 10.
The park's committee says the goal of the pop up is to attract people to the area, but local merchants say it blocks the road and makes it difficult for customers to get to their stores.
The New Canaan Chamber of Commerce has taken back its support for the park after the Pop Up Park’s committee felt the commerce was only promoting the interests of the local merchants.
Tucker Murphy, executive director of the New Canaan Chamber of Commerce, said, “I had heard over the years that we've been doing this, so many people coming up to me in grocery stores and what have you, saying ‘oh thank you for all you do for that, it's such a great thing for my kids.’ But I also heard the other side, which were merchants that were objecting. I was always trying to balance that and work for the merchants to help it work for them."
First Selectman Kevin Moynihan hopes the Pop Up Park committee and the Chamber of Commerce will be able work together to create a solution.
