Children’s triathlon training program seeks bike donations

NORWALK -

The Riverbrook YMCA is seeking bike donations for a free program that prepares children to compete in a triathlon.

The “Race 4 Chase” triathlon program is a youth program inspired by Chase Kowalski, who was killed in the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting. Kowalski loved sports, running and swimming. At 6 years old he successfully competed and won his first triathlon.

“We work at developing the whole child,” says Maryann Genuario, director of health and fitness at the Riverbook YMCA. “It's more about determination and community. Never giving up.”

The program is sponsored by the CMAK Sandy Hook Foundation and is being held at the Brien McMahon School in Norwalk for children ages 5 through 13 years old.

Since this year’s enrollment was higher than expected, the camp is asking for bike donations to ensure that all of the attendees have one to practice with and eventually take home at the end of the program.

Representatives of the program tell News 12 Connecticut that the camp will be receiving help from the Wilton real estate company Realty Seven and the Wilton Police Department to collect gently used bikes.
