A massive fire broke out this morning at the Soundsphere building on Research Drive in Stratford, causing the building to collapse.
Officials say the fire broke out at 6:30 a.m. Monday.
Every firefighter from the town of Stratford and crews from neighboring departments were called in to extinguish the flames.
One person was inside, but managed to exit the building in time.
Soundsphere manufactures high-end speakers.
Officials said a chemical reaction caused the fire, but they were still investigating how it started.
Employee Robert Betts said, “This business is probably gone and this is a business that goes back to the 1980s, and I don't know how to recover from it.”
The Fairfield County hazmat team is also on hand because officials said there were some hazardous materials in the building and there’s active air monitoring going on at the scene.
Officials say a few dozen people in neighboring buildings had to be evacuated.
Those buildings were not damaged, and there's no health hazard to the area.
Officials say those workers will likely be allowed to return inside either today or tomorrow.
