As the new school year approaches, an event Sunday supplied gear to kids whose families might not be able to afford everything they need.
The fourth annual "Back To School Shop" took place at the Davenport Ridge Elementary School gym, as students from low-income families got to pick out brand new supplies.
The kids got to choose a new backpack, outfit and school supplies. Students were also fitted for new sneakers and a winter coat. Everything given to children at the event was free.
Nearly 300 children will get to participate in the shop, thanks to donations from the community and the work of nearly 200 volunteers.
Meryl Japha and Jaine Levene are co-founders of the event. They say the shop is very important to them.
"To see the kids' faces when it comes together is just--I still cry three and four years later," Japha said.
The event's mission is to build confidence in the participating kids so that they are ready to learn and grow.
The foundation also provided an onsite resource center for parents and caregivers to pick up information on community resources available to them.
