Stamford considers ban on plastic shopping bags

The Stamford Board of Representatives is considering a citywide ban on plastic shopping bags.
In addition to banning plastic bags from all retail establishments, the new law would also require paper shopping bags to be comprised of 40 percent recyclable material and then 100 percent recyclable.
Those bags would come with a 10-cent charge, which the city hopes will encourage shoppers to bring their own reusable bags.
The city will hold a public hearing on the potential ban at the end of September, allowing businesses and shoppers to voice their opinions before the measure goes into effect.
