A cappella competition celebrates Judaism through music

Posted: Updated:
GREENWICH -

The first New England Jewish Collegiate A Cappella Competition, at Temple Sholom in Greenwich, celebrated Judaism through music.

Eight teams from colleges around the Northeast performed songs in English and Hebrew.

Five of them competed for first, second and third places along with best soloist and best beat-boxer.

The temple's teen show choir also performed for the first time under their new cantor.

Organizers say it's a way to expose people to Jewish music.

"We're looking for a way to bring relevant Jewish music to the community and we are looking for another venue for that and to bring Judaism to life in a way that's not being done all around the world," says cantor Sandy Bernstein.

Cantor Bernstein says in light of the Pittsburgh shooting, the event is way to connect with Jews everywhere and music shows support for the victims.
