Governor-elect Ned Lamont delivered a victory speech at his campaign headquarters Wednesday after defeating Republican Bob Stefanowski.

The tight governor's race dragged out Wednesday morning as more votes were being counted, with the winner being called at 9 a.m.

"I want Democrats there, I want Republicans there. We've got to work together to get through this thing, and that's how we're going to do it," said Lamont in his speech.

Stefanowski, a businessman, preached for tax cuts during this campaign. Lamont says he knows people in Connecticut want lower taxes, and says that he won't raise income tax and will slowly reduce property tax over time.

Part of Lamont's plan is to add highway tolls for trucks only, which may face a legal challenge from truckers.

"Everything I've known about Ned is, he's an honest man. Even when it may not be politically popular, he puts how he feels out there," says state Rep. Joe Aresimowicz.

During the race, Lamont distanced himself from Gov. Malloy. Malloy says that it was his strategy to not involve himself in the race.

Lamont had previously ran for statewide office three times.

Lamont said Wednesday night, he's going to relax at home in Greenwich and have a glass of wine.

He says he'll be getting to work Thursday, including assembling a transition team of business leaders by the end of the week.
