14 people displaced after explosion below Perth Amboy restaurant triggers fire
An explosion beneath the El Boy restaurant in Perth Amboy early Sunday morning caused a three-alarm fire that took firefighters over two hours to contain.
The fire chief says explosion occurred around 3:40 a.m.
All 14 people who live in apartments above the restaurant made it out without any injury, but the restaurant was destroyed in the fire.
The fire chief says two firefighters suffered minor injuries due to falls.
One firefighter who fell through a weakened floor was taken to the hospital, but was able to get himself out of the building.
Residents in the building next door were ordered out of their apartments by the fire department due to concerns that the flames could spread.
The family of the restaurant owner says they will rebuild El Boy. They say the restaurant opened 13 years ago.
