The Reserve at the Boulevard Apartments in Yaphank is requiring pet owners to provide a DNA sample from their dogs in an effort to crack down on unscooped droppings.
Some residents say they often find themselves stepping in dog feces and that it's turning their complex into a dump.
In an email to tenants, management says every pooch in the complex will have to be brought to an office and swabbed for their DNA.
Each sample would then be sent off to a company called BioPet Laboratories, where scientists make a genetic map of each dog that they have called a "poo print." That information would then be compared to any unscooped waste found on the property. And if there's a match, the pet owner would have to pay a $200 fine.
Dog lovers say they'll go along with the unusual process if it means the complex will be cleaned up. Some say taking a dog's DNA is a waste of time and think a camera would be more effective. But it turns out residents don't have much of a choice. The penalty for ignoring the test is a $150 fine, and both the dog and its owner could be evicted.
News 12 did not immediately hear back from management for comment.
