With summer right around the corner, police are reminding kids and parents about the importance of wearing a helmet when biking or riding a scooter.
Police handed out hundreds of helmets to children for free Saturday. They were able to get their heads measured by professionals and then got to pick out their favorite style and color.
The event is held every year in honor of Timothy Coppola, a child who fell off his bike and died of a traumatic brain injury. His mother and father, who was a longtime member of the Stamford police department, started this event back in the 1990s.
Since then, they've given away over 25,000 helmets. On top of that, they also make an effort to teach each child and parent about the importance of helmet safety.
