Stamford Police Department's new headquarters opened its doors to the public Tuesday during a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Construction started at 805 Bedford St. in Stamford back in February 2017 and sits right next to the current headquarters.

The new four-story building will house all of the department's units under one roof and cost $60 million to build.

"The building next door, which has been the city's police headquarters since 1956, has long outlived its usefulness. It's a tired, sick building that has many issues which come with age," says Chief Jonathan Fontneau, Stamford Police Department.

Tuesday also marks the 125th anniversary of the department, officials say. The new facility also opened its doors to the public for tours for the first time today.

Officials say the eight-phase project will be complete once the department moves into the building and the old building is demolished.

Each department will begin moving into the building at the end of the month.
