A large chemical fire broke out at a chlorine plant in Kearny Friday night.

The fire broke out at 10 p.m. on Jacobus Avenue and it shut down the Pulaski Skyway. All lanes were shut down in both directions between South Kearny and Broadway, but all roads have since reopened.

The fire broke out at the Alden Leeds plant. It burned for several hours and went up to four alarms.

Hazmat crews and fireboats responded to the fire.

Officials say a major concern was the air quality being affected due to the plumes of smoke. Residents tell News 12 that the chemical smell was strong.

No injuries or evacuations have been reported.

The DEP says it's monitoring air quality levels to make sure they're acceptable.

According to the Alden Leeds website, the company creates chemicals for swimming pools. The company has been in business for about 50 years.

Gov. Phil Murphy tweeted Saturday morning to say he's been briefed on the fire and is monitoring the situation.
