Officials: 2 workers injured in Stamford water plant explosion

STAMFORD -

An explosion at a Stamford water pollution control plant injured two workers and blew out large glass windows and a roll-up door at the facility, officials say.

The incident happened Thursday at the Stamford Water Pollution Control Authority on Harborview Avenue before 11 p.m.

Fire officials say a machine inside may have caused a dust explosion.

The two workers weren't seriously injured and one more worker was evaluated at the hospital but did not suffer injuries, officials say.

The plant was evacuated and is secure, according to officials.

Officials say the incident shouldn't impact city residents.

Stamford Fire Chief, Tom Gloersen, says the plant has a plan to continue to operate as the damage is assessed. "Obviously the plant, because of what happens, they're going to have to change the way they do business a little bit. They do have contingencies plans in place to handle this. So this particular part of the process won't be able to continue, but they have alternative ways to deal with the waste that's being produced," Gloersen says.

The building department has been called in to assess the damage.

OSHA will also be on scene to investigate.
