School officials in Shelton have decided to go ahead with the start of the fall sports season even though a mosquito tested positive for eastern equine encephalitis, or triple E.

Some high school football seasons have been delayed in communities across eastern Connecticut because of the disease. However, Shelton officials are moving forward with games and practices as scheduled.

Health officials say the mosquito that tested positive for triple E is mostly a bird-biting mosquito. The virus was detected in 11 other communities, but the majority were also the type of mosquitoes that don't feed on humans.

Health officials say there is no need for drastic prevention measures. They recommend that people wear long sleeves around dawn and dusk and stay away from standing water.
