A celebration was held Sunday in honor of Southport's 380th birthday.

The party was held at the Pequot Library -- the central hub of Southport.

Children volunteered at the raffle tables while others played on the lawn. There were also performances by local bands, croquet games and historical tours offered.

"There's some young families moving to the area so we're here to reach out," said Patty Sullivan, of the Sasquanaug Association.

The tradition of bringing community members together started in 1887 by a group of women that wanted to preserve the rich history of Southport. They came to be known at the Sasquanaug Association.

Southport's identity emerged in the 19th century when it moved from a farming town to a shipping town -- becoming known for its port and import of onions.
