Social Security cards are showing up in Bridgeport as part of a scam that police say targets undocumented residents.
Police Chief AJ Perez told News 12 that the bogus cards – printed with somebody's actual Social Security number – have been sold to people around Madison and Capitol avenues over the past couple of months.
Jessica Bobe, a tax preparer, spotted somebody using a bogus number in person and alerted federal investigators. Those investigators told News 12 that the cards can be used by undocumented residents to get a job, but more often they are used to engage in identity theft.
Police say are asking for the public's help identifying anybody who may be dealing in counterfeit cards.
