A new program with roughly $1 million in financial aid will make it easier for kids from working families to attend The University of Connecticut.
Connecticut Commitment promises scholarships for students who are accepted to UCONN whose families make less than $50,000 a year. It is guaranteed assistance that will cover the cost of tuition.
Students on campus say they are excited about how UCONN can evolve through the program.
"It is great that they are going to have a school with a good name on their resume," said Kayla Alston, a freshman. "Which can make them have larger incomes when they get older so they do not have to have the struggles of what they are going through right now."
"A lot more immigrant families will be able to afford to come to school and send their kids off to school, and not worry about that," said Khaled Elmady of Brookfield.
The news is getting high marks from local nonprofits, which help kids from families in need.
"Just the idea that there is a message being sent, that students are wanted and welcome in the system, is a remarkable message for families to hear," says Bridget Fox with Cradle to Career.
The program will start next year with about $1 million, but the cost is expected to rise as more classes of students qualify.
