A Bridgeport family who lost a loved one during the holiday season last year is letting others know of the warning signs of suicide.

Nearly one year ago, 20-year-old Demarius Bell took his own life. His relative, Harry Bell, says the holiday season will never been the same.

Harry Bell says the death of his grandmother played a major factor in Demarius Bell's death.

Harry Bell knows a Norwalk family who buried their loved one Saturday -- also after taking their own life.

"To see a person's life cut short at a young age, it's just horrifying to me," said Harry Bell. "It makes me feel sad because he didn't get to tap in to some of the great things that was in store for him."

The CDC reports that nationally, suicides actually peak during the spring and fall. But medical experts say people suffering from underlying issues such as depression or PTSD often feel alienated by the apparent joy around them during the holiday season.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal says veterans are especially vulnerable.

"That problem is particularly acute at this time of year when memories, post-traumatic stress, other kinds of pressure points may come back to haunt our nation's heroes or veterans," said Blumenthal.

Harry Bell says everyone should have their guard up during the holidays when it comes to friends and loved one feeling depressed.

"And there are people that want to help you get past some of the rocky moments in your life so don't think you are alone," said Harry Bell.
