Authorities say 28 people, including multiple children, were rescued from the breakwater rocks in Bridgeport Saturday night.
Officials say they got a call around 9:30 p.m. about a group of fisherman stranded as high tide came in.
Authorities say it turned out to be a group of people from out of state who were not observing social distancing rules about limiting gatherings to a small number of people. "When you get out there and it's low tide it looks like a wonderful place to visit, once the tide begins to roll in, it becomes too late. Once they realize they are cut off, it is too late, they're unable to return," says Bridgeport Deputy Fire Chief James Buck.
Bridgeport emergency responders say they were able get rescue boats in the water quickly. "With our Zodiacs, we were able to shuttle all of the individuals off of the rocks, get them a safe vessel and then get them transported back here to the Public Safety dock," says Buck.
Buck says they are concerned that visitors to Connecticut may think they can break social distancing guidelines. He says this group, mostly of New Yorkers, ignored the rules and put many lives at risk. “This is the type of thing to be careful about. We can’t just take a victory lap and say COVID-19 is nothing to worry about anymore. We still need to keep social distancing we still need to keep safety in mind.”
Nobody was seriously hurt.
