School children in Bridgeport are working to create a newspaper that will be placed inside of a time capsule.

Kids from the Thomas Hooker Elementary Lighthouse virtual afterschool program have been learning art and journalism skills. They are using what they learned to work on a project that aims to make a record of the community's experience during the pandemic.

Instructor Iyaba Mandingo says he thought a newspaper seemed the perfect way to record history. He says the project will allow the kids to, "come out of this understanding what happened…I don't want them to be confused I want them to understand it…show them that they, even as fourth graders, fifth graders, have the power to ask adults, 'What are you doing and why are you doing this?'"

The kids are drawing comic strips, writing letters to the president and learning how to interview.

"The plan is when we get this whole thing all together, we can give it to the library as our century time capsule," says Mandingo.

Organizers say the kids are doing all of the work from their homes. They say they also want a version featuring writing from teenagers and adults called the COVID Chronicle.
