A local paramedic says breathing in the summer heat could be a challenge while wearing a protective face mask during the pandemic, especially for those with underlying respiratory conditions.
AMR paramedic Matthew Hlavna says heat-related emergency calls have already begun to increase as the first official week of summer kicked off Saturday.
"We exhale hot air, so with the mask on, we're exhaling it, but then we're re-inhaling it so it's just going to make your body that much more prone to [a] heat-related emergency because we're breathing in that hot air," Hlavna says.
He recommends social distancing yourself and other people so that you can take the mask off and breathe easier when you are in an exhausting situation with heat.
"Know your limits. If you start feeling tired, definitely drink that water, take a break, get in the shade. Do not wear heavy clothing, always wear light clothing."
Hlavana says if you're able to find shade or a cool spot inside do it until you start to feel better.
