The Norwalk community is helping a man and his dog who have fallen on some hard times.

Michael Kirkland and 18-month-old pit mix Bruno have a roof over their heads now, but Linda Johnson says that wasn't the case Wednesday.

She says she saw Kirkland and Bruno walking on Post Road. At the time, Kirkland was barefoot and carrying the injured dog in a shopping cart. The two had walked from Middletown without money or a phone. Johnson says she offered them water but wanted to do more.

A post in the I Love Norwalk CT Facebook group racked up hundreds of comments, as community members jumped into action. A veterinarian technician came in to help Bruno, too.

The helpers met in a CVS parking lot and helped Kirkland and Bruno find lodging nearby at the Red Carpet Inn. But there is still a long way to go.

They are working on getting Kirkland and Bruno to Georgia, where the dog came from.

Kirkland says he's not accustomed to such kindness from strangers. Johnson says she wishes this kind of good deed was the rule and not the exception.

"He walked through the entire town of Westport and not one person stopped him," said Johnson.
