Students rally behind classmate kicked out of district
Stratford High School students staged a protest outside the school Friday to speak out against the Board of Education?s treatment of a fellow student.
Samantha Uliano, a senior, was told Friday it was her last day at the school because the district said she no longer fulfills the local resident requirements needed to attend.
Uliano was living with her two sisters and mother in a home in Stratford until July when her mother became ill. She and her family were then evicted from their home. To save money, Uliano and her older sister moved into an apartment in Stratford, while their mother found an apartment in Bridgeport.
According to the Board of Education's policy, students who live in a permanent Stratford residence with a relative other than a parent or legal guardian must receive permission to attend a local public school. However, Uliano?s mother and sister say they have been denied a meeting with the Stratford school superintendent.
Uliano?s sister is taking steps to find a permanent solution to the problem by filing for legal guardianship of Samantha.
Uliano said she hopes a resolution is reached by Monday so that she can return to her classes and continue her senior year.
