A bomb threat in Stamford set residents of southwestern Connecticut on edge Tuesday following a similar scare in Bridgeport the day before.
Authorities say they received a call at 9:30 a.m. from Lauri Glatzer, of Stamford, who said she arrived to work at the Body Quest Gym on Long Ridge Road with her co-worker, Erika Yarmoff, and found a suspicious suitcase in her parking spot.
"I knew it was strange that a piece of luggage was there, but I actually got out of my car and moved it," Yarmoff says.
A six-member bomb squad arrived on the scene shortly before 10 a.m. and evacuated the gym and a nearby Dunkin' Donuts café. The bomb squad took X-rays of the suitcase to determine its contents were not hazardous before opening it with a mechanical device. Police say inside they found miscellaneous items, including loose change and a deodorant stick.
"We responded, and we conducted our render safe procedures to determine there were not explosive components in the package," says Sgt. Lou DeRubeis, of the Stamford Police Department.
