Members of the Torrington community are mourning the death of a popular teacher who was hit by a car.
Nellie Crowston last worked as a substitute teacher at the Vogel-Wetmore Elementary School after teaching generations of students in the city.
Police say the 79-year-old was hit by a car Saturday evening at the intersection of Main and Lois streets as she was crossing the roadway.
Crowston was airlifted to Hartford Hospital with a severe head injury, but didn't survive.
According to police, the driver of the car has been cooperating with their investigation.
Crowston was also on the Torrington Democratic Town Committee, which released a statement today saying, "Her passing leaves a tremendous void in our community and in our hearts."
