Darien, Greenwich and New Canaan stores are hosting sidewalk sales this weekend with big discounts in hopes of boosting sales.
The retailers say connecting with old customers and enticing new ones is crucial for local businesses who face continued losses to online shoppers. There are more headwinds and less foot traffic, and combined with rising rents, taxes and other issues, it has left a wake of empty storefronts.
Some worry that this could have a lasting effect on small communities.
The Chamber of Commerce in New Canaan says it is working closely with retailers to execute a winning strategy.

New Canaan has big plans for its sidewalk sale, including a visit from Santa Claus on Saturday.
