A tractor-trailer fire backed traffic up for more than eight hours this morning on I-95 northbound near exit 23.
The trailer was filled with paper and caught fire around 3 a.m.
Authorities say it was one of the most persistent vehicle blazes they have ever fought and could have been worse.
They say the quick-thinking driver pulled the truck over and separated the cab from the trailer to prevent the fuel tanks from exploding.
One firefighter suffered heat exhaustion and was taken to the hospital.
